About Peace for Development
Founded by refugees and host community graduates, we are a collective of local and refugee communities working together for lasting impact through participatory research and innovation.
About Peace for Development
Peace for Development (PD) is a grassroots initiative based in Kakuma Refugee Camp and surrounding host communities. Our mission is to empower youth and children, prevent violence and drug abuse, promote democratic values, and strengthen community reconciliation through inclusive, community-driven approaches.
Our Focus Areas
1. Youth Empowerment & Child Development
We support vulnerable children through education programs, after-school tutoring, and recreational sports events, reaching over 300 children and 500 youth annually with life skills and psychosocial support.
2. Violence, Crime & Drug Prevention
Through quarterly awareness campaigns and peer mentorship, we educate over 1,000 youth and parents on drug abuse and crime prevention, building resilience and leadership in at-risk youth.
3. Democracy, Tolerance & Dialogue Promotion
Our bi-weekly radio peace talks and inter-community dialogue forums promote civic education and peaceful coexistence, with over 24 broadcasts reaching 10,000+ listeners annually.
4. Community Reconciliation & Mediation
PD trains 60+ local peacebuilders annually and establishes community mediation teams to resolve disputes and promote long-term reconciliation.
5. Advocacy & Better Living Conditions
We organize quarterly advocacy campaigns and community clean-up events, mobilizing over 1,000 residents to demand better services and contribute to safer, cleaner environments.
Monitoring, Budget & Impact
PD operates with a transparent M&E framework that includes baseline surveys, quarterly reviews, and community feedback forums. With an annual budget of KES 2.15 million, PD delivers measurable impact: improved education access, reduced youth crime, enhanced community dialogue, and empowered local mediators.
Our Commitment
Peace for Development is driven by community participation and sustainability. We engage youth leaders, elders, and local stakeholders to ensure lasting peace and improved living standards. Despite challenges, our team remains dedicated to a peaceful, empowered future for Kakuma and beyond.
